Thats right, Im talking about PetCo. The store I work at. Our fish at this PetCo and most Ive been to are really well taken care of. The people that work there, dont ALWAYS know what theyre talking about, and some just try to get you to buy things you dont want. But heres a few things I feel people should know.
There is EXTENSIVE training we all go through. So were not complete morons. We DO NOT work on commision. So if we try and tell you somethings good, it probably is. Were not going to get anything if you buy a new tank, or a bigger/filter. The bettas in the cups you see (I hate the cups but go with me) all come in ONE bag, and we split them up. Thats why they look so worn out. The cup in my eyes after seeing this, is a lot better. We do have a few in community tanks though.
Now on to Sam Walton. (WalMart)
Ive turned the one WalMart here in to Animal Cruelty 3 times now. They fear me when I walk in that store. The managers cringe when I go there..Me serving them with papers, and animal cruelty investigators ( which is the woman who runs the SPCA here) has had LONG conversations with them. They fear her. I agree people who work in petstores should know what theyre talking about. But what the public should realize is that not all of us are completely dumb and are only trying to make a sale. PetCo's employees DONT work on commision. Some other stores do, we DONT...Got it? Ok enough for this rant, Later all :-D

Altough I no longer work for them, the employees of PetCo go through EXTENSIVE online training and have to do reading from books to be certified to even handle the animals in the stores. Unless you come in with experience in the form of a degree or a degree in progress, you wont be able to touch animals until they deem you certified in each area. (Avian, Reptiles, Aquatics, and Small Animals) this is also true for when we reccomend other products. Like dog and cat food and the like. So please dont walk into every store with a chip on your shoulder thinking the fish are mistreated. Have some fait, and be patient. And DONT act like you know more, because although you may, nothing turns an employee off more than when you talk do to them. If you feel something is wrong, ask to speak to the manager of the store, get a comment card, or KINDLY make a suggestion. And I emphasize on the kindly. Choose your words very carefully.

I work in the fish department at the Wal-Mart here and I would tell you some things but I better not if I wanna keep my job. I personally have taken upon myself to self educate about the different kinds of fish we sell. I do my best to understand their needs and provide them with their needs with what I have to work with. I'm very conflicted working there I must say but atm I have to have a job.

Okay for this I must admit Amante_Di_Betta has a good point. Not everyone who works in a pet store is ignorant of proper care AS THEY WERE TRAINED!!. I say this because as I read the post I realized that through all the extensive training received the trainers passed along a common but totally gross malpractice of Betta care. CUPS are not a home, CUPS do not keep Betta's at the proper temp. unless of course you heat the whole store to 78-80 degrees. <Doubt that would happen>. Betta's do require room to move and even with a labyrinth organ require fresh clean water. I have been a Petco cusomer for years and believe me your not gonna fool fish breeders with cups full of Betta's in 68-70 degree water with garbage all over the bottom of them. And the reason employee's get turned off by suggestions no matter how polite is like most people who have been trained they assume that training makes them more knowledgeable than those who actually do know better. Sorry if this seems scathing but in now way should any fish be kept in such conditions as Betta's and others have for so long. And yes I have had many arguments with manager's from Petco to Petsmart, Walmart to Meijer about them selling people these stupid Betta condo's and other plastic prisons that their training said is okay to house them in. Before going off half thingyed on a rant do some research and see if said research matches what you were told. Really would you like living in a 6x6 closet for your entire life? I think not.
