Very nice even though this posting is a year old just visiting here today I know they'll do so much better with you than where you found them. I have a few 10's and 2 5's I have began setting up as a way to start saving a few I have seen in bad shape.
Hello Everyone « Result #2 on Sept 22, 2009, 12:37pm »
Hi my name is Rob and have been breeding and raising Fish for over 20 years. Of all fish I have bred the ones I fell most in love with are the Betta Splendins and Angelfish, though I do currently breed some of the more popular livebearer's <Swords, Platy's, Guppies>.
I have seen many good posts on this site and was invited by Ashley a while back from another site. Although my means to house many fish has been reduced in these times I agree that we need to not only rescue these fish but also prevent them from being sold by mega stores looking for a profit and selling people half dead fish due to lack of training and knowledge.
Keep up the good work Ashley and all who love these beautiful fish.

Okay for this I must admit Amante_Di_Betta has a good point. Not everyone who works in a pet store is ignorant of proper care AS THEY WERE TRAINED!!. I say this because as I read the post I realized that through all the extensive training received the trainers passed along a common but totally gross malpractice of Betta care. CUPS are not a home, CUPS do not keep Betta's at the proper temp. unless of course you heat the whole store to 78-80 degrees. <Doubt that would happen>. Betta's do require room to move and even with a labyrinth organ require fresh clean water. I have been a Petco cusomer for years and believe me your not gonna fool fish breeders with cups full of Betta's in 68-70 degree water with garbage all over the bottom of them. And the reason employee's get turned off by suggestions no matter how polite is like most people who have been trained they assume that training makes them more knowledgeable than those who actually do know better. Sorry if this seems scathing but in now way should any fish be kept in such conditions as Betta's and others have for so long. And yes I have had many arguments with manager's from Petco to Petsmart, Walmart to Meijer about them selling people these stupid Betta condo's and other plastic prisons that their training said is okay to house them in. Before going off half thingyed on a rant do some research and see if said research matches what you were told. Really would you like living in a 6x6 closet for your entire life? I think not.

One thing you can check is temp. Alot of people with community or bachelor setups set it around 72-74 deg. Betta's although flourish around 76-78 deg. In cooler water they will tend to be sluggish and inactive and often do not eat very well, you prolly saw this behavior when you purchased them as they were more than likely in a small cup or whatever. Hope that helps other than temp. make sure you do reg. tests on your water chemistry even though they will adapt to most tap water conditions it may take time.
